Popular Long Island light heavyweight contender JOE SMITH JR. (23-2-0, 19 KO'S), gritted his way through Saturday's ten round battle with SULLIVAN BARRERA (20-1-0, 14 KO's), after suffering a broken jaw early in the 2nd round. Even with a broken jaw, Smith Jr. dug deep to fire away at the skilled Barrera until the final bell, in which he ultimately fell short by scores of 96-93 and 97-92 twice.

The one thing that surprised me about Joe in that fight was his toughness. I still wanna see him fight some more.

I was wondering why Joe looked so flat after that first round. He looked like he really wasn't giving a full effort after that. I knew it was something because I knew he couldn't be tired already. Tough luck for a good guy.

Wow so no excuses? That seems shocking these days in boxing! Manny the politician and kkkovalev the cry baby make it seem like being cry baby sore losers was just a part of boxing! Refreshing to see no excuses from a humble warrior like joe smith jr....

Joe's a true warrior and great puncher who can have a promising future as a light heavyweight. Great crowd pleasing fighter with a big heart.

That being said, it might be time (with all due respect) to hire a big time, experienced trainer who can teach him improved boxing techniques, both defensively and offensively. Two broken jaws at his young age, and the wild lunging in style which left him wide open to devastating uppercuts over and over, shows he might benefit from some new blood in training camp.
