A nice, long break was exactly what Robert Guerrero needed following arguably the worst loss of his 16-year pro boxing career. By the time the 34-year-old Guerrero gets back in the ring to meet Omar Figueroa on July 15 in Uniondale, New York, 10 months will have passed since his split-decision defeat to huge underdog David Peralta. The Argentine cab driver was supposed to be a tune-up opponent for Guerrero in first fight after losing a WBC welterweight title fight to Danny Garcia in January 2016.

I've always maintained that the version of Guerrero who toyed with Katsidis in 2011 could've been a legit world champ from 135 to 147. Somewhere during that time, he decided to adopt this brainless "warrior" (yeah yeah, I know it's his name) style of rock-'em-sock-'em brawling, yet he just doesn't have the tools to make it work against bonafide boxers like Mayweather, Thurman, Garcia, Spence, etc.

Feels like I'm parroting this, but if he ever goes back to using that long-ass jab and laser-sharp straight left, he'll be OK and maybe his head won't turn to mush eventually.

He was pretty damn good until he made that 2 weight class jump to 147lbs. He immediately looked slow, got into brawls, lost his timing, etc. I think he could have had a great career had he not done that. But, with the money he's made in the glamour division, I really can't say it was a "bad" move. His family is set for life.

I'm still a fan because he's a great guy, but I don't expect much out of him in the ring anymore.

If his wife hadn't fallen ill, I think we might've seen his best performance against Maidana in that cancelled fight at 140. He might've even done a better job than Alexander, seeing as Guerrero has never had trouble brawling instead of clinching.

It's sad that we never got to see a prime Guerrero against the cream of 140 at the time – Bradley, Khan, Matthysse, Peterson, or even a faded Judah.
