  • Comments Thread For: Daigo Higa Receives a Hero's Welcome in Okinawa After Title Win

What a knockout! As new World Boxing Council flyweight champion, Daigo Higa, was rapturously greeted as a hero in his native Okinawa, Japan. Young undefeated Higa, a native of the city of Urasoe of the province of Okinawa, was crowned as the new WBC flyweight king by stopping Mexico's Juan "Churritos" Hernndez in Tokyo on the 20th of May.

What the hell is going on with the painted faces? but Japan's scene is really lit right now back to back challengers stepping up to the world stage and even winning the crowns.

We got Sho Ishida coming up next to challenges GB Kal Yafai, Inoue might be headed to America; Ryota Murata should of really won the regular WBA middle weight title, Kosei Tanaka proved to be the goods vs. Mexicos Fuentes & Puerto Ricos' hard hitter Angel Acosta @ 108 and Yamanaka became lineal @ 118 in over what? 20+ years @ 118?! AND seeks to tie Diagos mentor the great Yoko Gushiken record in defenses

-- but sadly these lames on NSB dont know **** about the greatness of the lighterweights.

In fairness there are too many lil guy weight divisions with too few quality fighters in them to really enjoy them. I consider most of the lil guy divisions like womans boxing in that there isn't THAT much real competition there. They got cats too spread out. They need to cut the lower 8 or 9 divisions into about 4 divisions.

That said I jumped on Daigo a couple days before his belt winning performance after watching a couple of his fights & thinking he was gonna f#ck up ole boy & he's a lil guy I'll be following into the future.

And respect to lil guy Ken Shiro too who won a belt on the same night. Those two could become worthwhile lil champs moving into the next generation of fighters that are upon us.

This is false, we had just as many 'llitle' guys enter the P4P recently if not more then higher weights. Its just a matter of prejudice ; these MEN put on better fights on a consistent basis than the higher divisions and fight MORE top tens champions year round than the higher weights.

Find me a cruiser weight that has enter the P4P lately or someone at HW. Please stop this bashing on smaller men they actually prove to be bigger men than there counterparts that take drugs, cheat in all kinds of ways and blatantly duck fights that we only get hyped over for years on end until they finally decide to cash out -- and that's not even certain.

You guys dont get spoon fed these fights throught the major networks and so you decide they are not quality if you cant watch them on the flat HD 4K tv set, so you dismiss them as irrelevant.

I suggest you give them a chance and go into it without preconceived notions before you judge.

100 percent KO rate to a title is impressive

Idk what you are going on about. I'm not saying there aren't talented lil guys so you are climbing the wrong tree. I'm saying there aren't ENOUGH lil guys. Just like the womans divisions I used as an example hence I & most don't have as much interest in them. Although I will admit plenty of fans don't give them respect cuz they are lil guys, but I'm not from that tribe.

For a more specific example of active boxers the biggest 8 divisions (140 to HW) hold about 57% of the active boxers in the world while the smallest 9 divisions (105 to 135) have 43% of active boxers even through they represent 53% of the divisions. That suggests to me there are too many lil guy divisions.

And it only gets worst the lower you get. The smallest 5 divisions (105 to 118) only got 14% of the active boxers while representing 29% of the divisions.

Thats the #1 problem I have withe lil guy divisions.

I'm pretty sure I understood the first time, when you compare mens boxing to womens boxing how do you expect me to take that? then you use the term 'lil' guy or this or that , it tells me you are taking into account something that you shouldn't be when assessing these weights ; size does not factor in my book - if you had a change of heart after reading my reply that's a different discussion.

You were talking about quality and now you give me figures highlighting quantity - pretty ironic don't you think? Have you ever heard the term quality vs. quantity?

I mean as a boxing fan I'm not counting the number of fighter at 140 to compare it to 147, I know boxing I know quality fighters and who is proven -- its simple and no need to disguise some agenda behind stats like boxrec.

Again you are arguing x & I'm not even talking about x.

I know quality too. I know there are quality lil guys. I just know there isn't enough quality in the lil guy divisions cuz there aren't enough lil guy fighters.

Just cuz you're lil guy don't mean you are automatically more gifted then a bigger guy to even things out since you're smaller.

Lil guy divisions are like womans boxing. There isn't enough depth to make it compelling enough for most fans to watch that enjoy boxing & don't even have the "I can beat that guy up" mentality like some dummies do.

And honestly I just enjoy saying lil guy as often as possible + think its a funny term in general. Not much of a conspiracy there, but fair play if you wanna accuse me of whatever you're accusing me of to make your stance have more merit over mine. Ricardo Lopez was among my favorite fighters & probably the most technically sound guy I've seen who boxed & he was a lil guy, but cuz there were few quality guys in his weight divisions he never proved himself to the degree he could have if the lil guy divisions were combined.

Lets be honest for a minute and stop playing games we both know the general public would not give these men a chance -- you can put two mediocre HWs up against two elite flyweights on the same night and the average boxing fan would chose the HW no matter how you try to sell it to them bottom line, it has nothing to do with what you call 'depth' as if the average fan is some kind of cannasure -- when they dont even follow the welterweights ; ask NSB who is top five in any division and most wont be able to give you the answer unless they google it. The sad part is these guys suppose to know boxing considering it is a boxing forum.

We just cant agree on this - I mean for me keeping up with the lighter-weights is hard as it is, I cant imagine doing it if the division grew. I'm completely happy with the current stock, they are making some remarkable strides in the sport more than the last ten years - as I already mentioned the #1. P4P was a flyweight, three others men from surrounding divisions joined him on the top ten P4P rankings in the last two years

and with the new blood like Diago and Tanaka we are going to keep seeing them out-perform the heavy weight classes unless boxing remains in beast mode 2017 style where everyone starts consistently fighting each other but the lighterweights will always deliver no matter the season.
