Comments Thread For: Joe Smith's Promoter Explains The Long Road To Sullivan Barrera

The last time Joe Smith (23-1, 19 KOs) was in the ring, he was capping off a banner 2016 by literally knocking Bernard Hopkins out of the ring at the Forum near Los Angeles on December 17th, scoring an eighth round stoppage. Earlier that year he had scored a shocking first round KO of heavily favored Andrzej Fonfara. It was formally announced on Wednesday that Smith would be facing Sullivan Barrera (19-1, 14 KOs) on July 15th at the Forum as part of a 'Boxing After Dark' broadcast on HBO.

Joe Smith Jr is a dangerous puncher, so he could be a risk to Stevenson. Barrera is a tough guy and takes a punch well, so it could be an interesting fight.

Joe isn't ducking, that's for sure. Sullivan is proven quality. I'm rooting for Joe, but my money won't come out of my pocket. Barrera has better skills, I guess that's how it is at this level. Joe can do it, but it won't be as "easy" as the last two.

Bazooka Joe got ducked by Stevenson!

Joe gave Stevenson a chance to come to NYC, get your name back in the bigger picture, get more renown, a fight with an opponent who's hot right now and a chance to make a statement!.

Once again Supes chosed money over legacy!

The Stevenson Brigade (which consists of 3 members) will tell you how it was the other way around. Yet they fail to realize how Stevenson couldn't even make a fight happen with Seanie Monaghan. Not saying Seanie was a threat but there's a pattern here. Stevenson has no intentions of fighting anyone and ESPECIALLY outside of Canada.

What sense does it make for Smith to duck Stevenson only to turn around and fight Barrera for less money? But I guess whatever makes them sleep at night.

Barrera most likely ends this hype train. I like Joe, but it remains to be seen if he can box with someone the likes of Sullivan Barrera.

Should Joe win? We will all be happy because it sets up a fun fight with Ward/Kovy winner.

Seriously - what a year in boxing

This is one of those fights that anyone who follows the sport understands, ITS GOING DOWN! In a way I'm happy Stevenson ducked kovalev. The WBC belt has kept the division moving while Ward and kovalev settle their beef.

Bad matchup for Barrera who's skills are overrated. He will stand and trade, gas out and get knocked out. Smith in 6.
