  • Comments Thread For: Hopkins: Canelo Got Better and Better Since Mayweather Loss

Bernard Hopkins talked up the development of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, insisting the Mexican boxer is still getting better. Canelo takes on countryman Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in Nevada on Saturday, looking to improve on a 48-1-1 record. His first and only defeat came by majority decision in September 2013 at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

on what basis, he beat washed up cotto, sc****d a win against lara, looked like he was struggling against khan too, why are people so convinced hes improved. still looks the same fighter in there to me, wasnt some novice against mayweather, didnt he have like 40 fights or something like that, seem to remember people saw him as a legitimate threat to mayweather after beating trout, now its been revised that he was some kind of rookie who had no chance. fact is he stunk out the joint and got embarrased.

honestly I don't see the improvement either, maybe a little but what I do think he gained was a lot of experience,i mean facing boxers like Floyd, cotto, trout, those guys help a lot,but yeah I think sometimes you don't improve much but if you keep winning that's what counts,,,i just think for me to call him great he needs to beat golovkin and maybe charlo, but for now I think he's an avg fighter

He only looks good against little or face first opposition. Was outpunched by Trout, didn't win a single round against Floyd, IMO Lara beat him on points but understood the decision based on Lara's lack of activity. Cotto was a close fight. Smith was bullying him in the fight too, but the power difference was too much.

Bottom line, he struggled or lost against every top opposition he faced. Take a look at his resume and you won't see a solid W against a top contender (fighting on even terms, so please don't say Khan).

I don't believe the "improvement" theory. Oscar knows that.

Of course he will look better afterwards but in effect he has not really faced any real competition other than blown up Cotto.

Canelo is a counterpuncher. He has improved his defense and counterpunching ability.

Don't know why some here fail to see it, plus now he sets up traps and is moving his opponent where he wants them.

But his problem is that he IS a counter puncher. When he presses a fight he don't look that good because of those slow legs which have not improved a bit

How are people ****** enough to able to debate this? He was a kid back then, every day you learn more and more and he's had 4 years to develop and hone his skills. He's even taken a few things from Floyd; the experience was extremely valuable. His head movement and defence is underrated and he's great at counterpunching, setting traps and going to the body. Of course he's inproved and he will continue to do so.

Hopkins is laying down some down home HBO promo BS. There is NOTHING to indicate ANY dramatic improvement. Smart promotion is still Saul's greatest asset.

but he still beat those guys you mention besides Floyd of course,,even though they were close fights those guys also didn't dominate canelo,if canelo isn't really that good they would have dominated him easily and that didn't happen, trout was just as big and young and he didn't do that well as he had with other opponents and neither did lara, even if lara would have gotten the decision it was still a close fight, and for those who say lara is good and canelo isn't,fighters like that should easily beat guys like canelo and that didn't happen, they were all close fights,,,but either way,i still feel he's avg,and until he beats ggg and maybe charlo i'll say he's good,,i can say the same about lara,he hasn't beaten a top rated boxer,he "lost"to Williams but Williams is no boxer, beat a brawler in angulo too...it goes both ways, yeah he hasn't really beaten a great boxer, but those guys haven't either, and if they were really that good they would have easily beaten canelo and that didn't happen,..either way I have a feeling it doesn't matter if canelo does beat a good boxer, people will still find excuses and bring up another fighter he is ducking,so who cares
