  • Dempsey and Johnson; Who Would Win?

I received an email from a boxing enthusiast and he challenged me on the topic of - Could Jack Dempsey really beat Jack Johnson if they ever fought? His point was that Jack Dempsey couldn’t carry Jack Johnson's jock strap and made an excellent case for Johnson's superiority. So I asked boxing historians for their view. Both fighters had common opponents, Jess Willard and Fireman Jim Flynn. Willard defeated Johnson whereas Dempsey destroyed Willard. In the reverse, Johnson slaughtered Flynn whereas Dempsey was knocked out in his first fight with the Fireman. (He did revenge the loss with a one round knock out in their next encounter.)

But let us disregard these fights. Willard defeated an out of shape and old Johnson, who spent the previous three years overseas and avoiding prosecution from the Mann Act. When Dempsey fought Willard, Willard had only fought one time in four years. What we need to examine is boxing style. Dempsey fought boxers such as Tunney, Gibbons and Carpentier. He easily beat Carpentier and out slugged Gibbons. However, Tunney easily beat Dempsey twice. Tunney was a boxer in Johnson's class and showed that a great boxer could beat Dempsey. My critics will remind me that Dempsey had not fought in three years and was 31 years old. My counter is that Dempsey was only three years older than Tunney and in the rematch, it was Tunney who had taken the whole year off while Dempsey defeated Sharkey in a elimination fight. Dempsey did not have the excuse of being rusty in their second match. It was my belief that the Dempsey who defeated Willard would have probably beaten Tunney but the 1923 version that scratched out a decision against Gibbons would have had difficulty in beating Tunney.

great article..I always enjoy looking back. My opinion is that Johnson would have taken it to Dempsey. I love Dempsey and all, but Johnson was superior defensivly and with his speed. Jack would have had a tough time finding Johnson.

I would go with Dempsey. Dempsey was a good swarmer/slugger with good speed and he would have fought Johnson on the inside for the whole fight. Johnson defense was consisted mainly of parrying punches which would not have helped him against Dempsey's power. So stylewise its all Demspey.

Good article, very cool. Two great old school boxers, man. I gotta go with Dempsey. It sure would be a fight I'd like to see. I gotta tell ya, you guys crack me up sometimes. Somebody's callin' Johnson~Jackson three times in this article. Hell of a fight, but I'm in Dempsey's corner.

I think dempsey would have lost. This is because johnson was the better boxer. Both possesed devestating power but i feel johnson would have had the stronger chin. Also johnson was know as one of the best defensive fighters of all time (That is why Max Schmelings camp used him to find flaws in joe lewis in their first encounter). with that in mind i would have to say that johnson would be able to stay clear of dempseys hard hitting shots and then counter with his own heavy guns.

No way does Johnson have a better chin than Dempsey. He was floored by Ketchel (who hit damn hard but was still only a middleweight) and completely KO'ed by Joe Choynski who was a natural middleweight and had maybe half of Dempsey's power. Johnson had a great defense and good confidence and heart but his chin was mediocre.

On the other hand, Dempsey had a solid chin and downright amazing recovery. Any time he was hurt, a few seconds later he could be seen swarming his opponent again, throwing hard, accurate punches. That's the reason that Dempsey-Firpo was such a good fight; Dempsey recovered so quickly even from getting knocked out of the ring and then he immediately fought back like an enraged pitbull. No way in hell Johnson can hurt Dempsey more than he'd be getting hurt in this fight.

Dempsey has every advantage in his fight but weight and a tight defense and Johnson's preferred method of defense was to stand and parry punches. With a guy like Dempsey, who had awesome power in both hands and could fight well both inside and out, parrying will only take you so far. He didn't have the mobility of Tunney and I don't think his hands were any quicker than the Manassa Mauler's.

Johnson would win because of his science, but Dempsey would make it a tough and close fight.
