Comments Thread For: Trainer: Canelo Sparring in Top Form With Light Heavyweights

According to Eddy Reynoso, trainer of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs), the Mexican star is doing very well in his current sparring sessions with boxers who are much bigger than him. Canelo is preparing for his Cinco De Mayo showdown with countryman Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. - taking place on May 6th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Wait...you didn't know fighters cut weight? Please tell me that's a joke.

172-74 is actually a lot smaller than I thought. Got guys saying he comes in at 180 fight night and the guy is 172-174 with 2 months left and not even worrying about cutting. I've heard Tim Bradley getting bigger than that along with other 47-54 fighters.

Hate aside, Canelo is really not as big as we make it sound when we talk all that s hit. He just has that dense frame. I'm not even sure he's the biggest 54 pounder let alone him being close to "big" (in comparison to some of the MWs) when he hits 160.

Canelo could probably still make 54 at the end of this camp if he had to..maybe. 18 pounds seems feasible in 2 months when you take the cut into consideration.

I want to hear about how Canelo's sparring sessions go when Benavidez gets in there with him. He just got done as a sparring partner for Golovkin and now he's going to be a sparring partner for Canelo.

Some boxers were able to regain 20 lbs. between weigh-in and fight night weight. Light heavyweight Canelo maybe can do this too...

Walking around just over 170 at this point is good, he's going to be completely hydrated at the weigh in.

190 in the ring according to Cash Out Khan though
