  • Comments Thread For: Paulie Malignaggi - The 'Magic Man' Decides To Call it a Day

By Thomas Gerbasi - Some people make an impression the moment you meet them. Paulie Malignaggi is one of those people. It was the weekend of the Bernard Hopkins-Keith Holmes fight in April 2001. Malignaggi walked into the legendary boxing bar Jimmy's Corner with a legend of the New York boxing scene, matchmaker Johnny Bos. Everybody knew Bos, but only the locals knew of Malignaggi, who was about to make his pro debut in a couple months...

One of my favorite fighters of all time. Nobody got more out of their talent through sheer determination than Paulie Malignaggi.

IBF world champion at junior welterweight. WBA world champion at welterweight. Had to go overseas and win by knockout to get that welterweight title.

Never went after WBOgus or WBA "regular" titles.

Talked a ton of ****. Fought every big name willing to fight him. Won some. Lost some. But always kept it real and always spoke his mind.

Now we get to hear him at ringside for many years to come.

      WAR MALIGNAGGI

No disrespect but he was C+ level at best, never beat a good fighter during his career, was a stepping stone for the real fighters like Garcia, Porter, and Khan and that's about it

He won the IBF belt at 140 and the WBA belt at 147. C+ fighters do not hold WBC/WBA/IBF world championships in multiple weight divisions.

He beat Juan Diaz and Zab Judah, who were good fighters, and he went on the road to knockout Senchenko for the WBA Welterweight Championship of the World.

These are not things that C+ level fighters do.

Yes, he had had C+ level physical skills, but A+ heart and A+ intelligence.

I'm not sure where you would rank a very old Judah and Diaz, and Senchenko was nothing special either

And Malignaggi was old when he fought Garcia, Porter so I guess those dont count either then, Senchenko KOed Hatton and Diaz was a former undisputed world champion at lightweight regardless he went 12 rounds with a prime Miguel Cotto and fought through a broken orbital bone and jaw injury.
