Comments Thread For: Wilder: PED Cheats Must Be Punished More Before it Ruins Boxing

Deontay Wilder won what he believes will be a landmark case for combatting performance-enhancing drugs in boxing. A jury in a Manhattan federal court ruled in Wilder's favor Monday in his civil case against Alexander Povetkin. Wilder sought $5 million in damages when he filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit against Russia's Povetkin, whose positive PED test caused the cancelation of their May 21 fight in Moscow, and his promoter Andrey Ryabinsky eight months ago.

All these dudes he's trying to fight are drug users. He can't catch a break.

Who got enough confidence to fight this man on a level playing field?

Wilder isn't wrong here. People are always going to try and find an advantage, and pharmacies will always be one step ahead of testing agencies - but for those that do get caught cheating, they need to have the book thrown at them. And that book needs to be beefed up to weigh a ton.

Right now, the risk-reward scenario is too sweet for some people to turn down. Worst case, they are only gone for 2 years - best case, they get off on a technicality, or get a reduced sentence. The existing punishments just aren't enough to deter people from trying.

We may never get to a scenario where punishments are deterrents, however. Because the majority of the power sits with organizations that have their best interest served by people fighting in the ring - not being suspended. Why would any organization throw their weight behind something that limits or takes away their earning capacity? That's like asking an NFL team to hand out punishments to their own players for cheating.

He should be fighting for the WWE Belt instead. They have no problem with their athletes taking PED's over there. In fact they used to provide it to all their stars.
