Comments Thread For: "Fighting Words" - One Prospect Rises Fast, Another Falls Hard

by David P. Greisman - They arrived in the same place, yet not, two prospects due for their toughest tests yet, though those tests were of differing degrees of difficulty. They exited the ring having reached contrasting conclusions. Gervonta Davis was readier than his record had indicated, a prospect who didn't just skip a grade but rather leapt past contender status, exiting Barclays Center in Brooklyn with a world title...

What risk did Davis take facing a slower, less powerful guy with no top wins, who never beat a champion to get a title, and who got a controversial decision to keep it? Boxing needs to stop hyping guys as elite professionals before they beat elite professionals Davis is very talented and appears hard working but boxing fans should not talk about him being a star in the sport or "the future of boxing" until he fights guys with speed and power and so on. If he beats a Valdez, a Walters, a Gamboa, even a Russell Jr., then it's more notable. Lomachenko... But he's a talented kid with a very bright future. Still young and improving. Just don't try to sell something that hasn't happened yet. Pedraza was not an elite guy to begin with and then he fought with a terrible gameplan too.

Good win for Davis. Not super polished but he should get there pretty quick and he won't hit his prime for 3-5 years

Great win for Davis! It only gets tougher from here. I hope to see Davis vs. Farmer next! Farmer is a different fighter since his loss to Pedraza in 2012!

Beat a undefeated champ but get no credit. Got to love racism.

Good shout, I'd like to see that fight. Liam Walsh is also due a crack at the IBF soon and is a decent boxer

Davis is a beast and I like him more than I liked Broner back when he was breaking through, but in round five we perhaps got a glimpse of what it would take to put him off his game and give him an L?

Also, I'd like to see Pedraza vs. Linares at some point. I think it'd be a really clean, interesting fight between two aggressive technicians

Pedraza definitely needs to move up! He looked extremely weak and thin at the weigh-in!

"Every prospect ...., must test himself again and again". That would be great if it happened but mostly we see guys avoiding tough competition and trying to stay undefeated.
Hopefully the great action this weekend sets the stage for a good year for boxing fans.

First of to the writer David P. Greisman, this article felt like a mini series on showtime. Second, why be champ to avoid certain fighters and I'm not criticizing tank. This kid is tough and I'm sure he would go in against any fighter and try and take there head off but Floyd making the statements he has are ridiculous.

Floyd knows exactly what he's doing with Davis regardless of what the fire may look like Floyd is putting him into situations that he has to adapt and overcome with ...a, year or so more he will b there...
