Comments Thread For: Donaire Wants Tune-up at 126, Then Maybe Valdez in The Fall

Nonito Donaire is not exactly fired up by the idea of fighting undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion Oscar Valdez on a date in March.

Time to hang it up, Nonito.

I dont blame him for not rushing for this fight, but the longer he waits the better Valdez gets

Every time I try to convince myself in thinking "Yeah, Donaire's going to sort himself out for this next fight and finally look sensational again like he did in 2011–12", I have to face reality...
        • Since Rigondeaux, he's fallen apart against any opponent who tests him even a small amount. Cesar Juarez FFS!
        • 2011–12 was half a freakin' decade ago.
        • His reflexes, footwork, handspeed and punch variety are at their all-time worst. All he looks for is that left hook, and Magdaleno was making him look like a clown by avoiding it.
        • Punching power and punch resistance is all he has now, and those too disappear at 126.

If he takes another loss, I agree with the poster above – hang 'em up, Flash.

Donaire should be asking for the other name guys who moved up from 122 back from that original class where 90% of them ducked each other at 122. But now they're all at 126! Donaire-Mares is a fight Nonito can win, and a good name. Even Frampton and Santa Cruz are not big bulls at 126 like Walters and Valdez. Donaire can probably take their punches and there's no guarantee those former 122's can take Donaire's.

Jhonny Gonazlez, because of his win over Mares, also has a name somewhat, and style wise he's kind of a poor man's Donaire with his left hook, just slower and not as powerful normally. Donaire could go for that too.

But Valdez? Hard to think of a worse opponent for Donaire at this point in his career. Don't get me wrong Donaire should fight the best, but so should Valdez and until Donaire proves he can beat a guy on Abner Mares level first, Donaire doesn't qualify.

            My two thoughts on this:

            1) If this happens, fair play to Donaire for taking a fight he doesn't need to, and one which most other fighters are avoiding

            2) He would be better served by his promoter fighting one of the other guys who moved up from 122 rather than just matching someone in the Top Rank stable. Feels to me this is a cashing out of Nonito to to ramp up Valdez's profile

Arum's "incentive" for Nonito to gain a rematch with Magdaleno, which is to beat Valdez first, is nonsense. If Nonito beats Valdez, he becomes the featherweight champion. Why would then he covet the 122-lb title of Magdaleno if he is already the 126-lb champion?

Arum is just talking out of his ass. He's always given Donaire a raw deal ever since Donaire thought about leaving him 5/6 years ago.

I still think it's sickening that Donaire has got so much criticism from so called fans too. Four years down the line, he is still the only big name fighter that has fought Rigondeaux. Everyone else and their mother has ducked him, yet those fighters (we know who they are) have fans who mock Donaire for losing to Rigo. I like Valdez but I would love to see Donaire get just one more win to shut those idiots up. Probably won't happen sadly.

yeah I agree with you donaire gets unfairly critiqued for no good reason.he's a great fighter who ducks nobody. he's old and doesn't have to take this fight with a young hard puncher like valdez.props to him if he does.arum is just trying to feed him to his young and upcoming fighter.
