  • Comments Thread For: Walters: He's The Same Lomachenko as The One That Lost To Salido

Nicholas Walters heard promoter Bob Arum compare Vasyl Lomachenko's skill level to that of a young Muhammad Ali during a conference call Monday. Jamaica's Walters (26-0-1, 21 KOs) also has studied all the footage from Lomachenko's impressive but brief professional boxing career. The former two-division champion still doesn't believe the hype that accompanies Lomachenko (6-1, 4 KOs) as they approach a highly anticipated, 130-pound showdown Saturday night at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas (HBO).

I saw Loma sit down on his punches a bit more in the last fight. He had to, otherwise durable guys are just going to walk through his punches like Salido did.
I don't see a lot of other changes in Loma though. Of course he's going to look better against a bunch of cans, that doesn't mean he changed.

Martinez is pretty much gone and I think he looked like garbage in the 2nd Salido fight, compared to the first. But, for the sake of argument, let's say he's still roughly Salido-level still. I think that not focusing on speed as much and putting more pop on his punches is the thing that makes him different now. Walters just needs to be real smart to capitalize on his opportunities here, because he's got 2 distinct advantages.

Lomachenko is going to school walters. Two time gold medalist 396-1 in the amatures. The only way loma loses if he damages his hands or gets careless and walters lands a good one.

Not sure who wins this one. I give the edge to Lomachenko. After seeing Donaire lose to Jesse Magdaleno Walters KO win doesn't seem that big of a deal anymore. But I hope Walters proves me wrong.
