Floyd Patterson: Great Person, Great Champion

I found out Floyd Patterson passed away Thursday morning. I had a feeling this day would come sooner than later. We all knew Floyd was very ill, the progression of Alzheimer’s over the past decade had slowly robbed him of many of the remembrances of his fine career, as well as many of the wonderful associations he nurtured over the 47 years he devoted to boxing, from a Simon Pure in the New York City Golden Gloves in the early 1950’s until his sad and sudden resignation as Commissioner of the New York State Athletic Commission in 1998.

Floyd Patterson was much more than a sports personality or Former Heavyweight Champion. He was what is a true rarity in sports today, a wonderful and positive inspiration for the youth of this nation. He left us a beloved and much admired figure, an elder statesman for the sport he championed and loved to the last. [details]

Every time I look up stuff on him, I always read of how much of a nive guy he was and how much of an inspiration he was to young kids, it's too bad we don't have much of these types of guys in boxing now a days. R.I.P FLoyd, i wish i was around to watch you fight.

Thank you so much for the outstanding article. I had the opportunity to see Floyd Patterson in a sparring session when I was a kid. My dad took me to his training camp in the Catskill Mountains while he was training for the second Johannson fight. I was impressed by his demeanor and his boxing skill (he looked so big to me at the time).

But it was his persona that was so impressive. He was always kind and unassuming, not brash or egocentric. His desire to help underprivileged boys learn the trade was an inspiration. Would there be more people like him in the sport today!

I for one am thankful to God for his life.
