Comments Thread For: "Fighting Words" - Breaking Down 2016's Fighter of the Year Race

by David P. Greisman - Sometimes deciding the Fighter of the Year is a matter of nomination. Too often, it involves a process of self-elimination. Boxers lose. Boxers don't fight often enough. Boxers don't fight difficult enough opponents. This award isn't what matters most to them - they want the right fights at the right time for the right price - but it does serve to validate what was already accomplished over the span of 12 months...

FYI; the year isn't over and his lead contenders haven't fought yet.

I agree with him to an extent. The winner of Ward Kovalev will probably snatch it based on the significance of that one fight. If it somehow turns out to be painful to watch, I imagine the choice could easily change, maybe go to Frampton.

has to be jackal frampton. Won the Fight of the year imo against santacruz and Two good wins equal better than one, which is what the ward/kovalev winner would have. Although no doubt if ward wins, the black panther party will demand he wins fighter of the year

          Ward/Kovalev Winner
          Gonzalez
          Frampton

All need to be considered. Fight of the year must be Frampton v Santa Cruz.

I've already seen 3 fights this year I liked better. I'm not saying you've wrong, the that's really a personal choice. But, it's a tough category this year. There is no clear winner.

I feel like the Kovalev-Ward winner is a lot like Marquez/Pac 4, where that one win is so significant that it will be very hard to overcome.

Whereas Donaire had a pretty incredible year in 2012 to make that a debate, no one in 2016 has had that same kind of year to make that same debate. Assuming no controversy, the Kovalev-Ward winner should be FOTY.

It's definitely Frampton when you consider the quality of opposition, but I doubt he will get it over winner of kovalev ward.

Frampton should win. Kov and Ward, whoever wins, will still have a crappy fight on their resume this year. Not Frampton.
