  • Comments Thread For: Canelo vs. Smith - CompuBox Punch Stats

Sporting the upper body and punching power of a light heavyweight, the hand speed of a welterweight and the precision of a diamond cutter, Canelo Alvarez wins Liam Smith's WBO super welterweight title by scoring knockdowns in rounds even (right to the ear), eight (left to the solar plexus) and nine (hook to the ribs), the last of which left Smith writhing on the canvas and prompting the stoppage.

gggboxing: I didn't expect that Smith punched so hard and that Canelo would talk that nonsense after the fight.

These stats -- similar to previous fights' stats from Alvarez -- show that, as in previous fights he needs to work A LOT MORE on a couple of things: 1) Stamina and 2) Jab. All those punches he unnecessarily received, happened because he had to lean on the ropes to recover from getting tired and get some oxygen to be able to resume throwing brutal power punches. But honestly, his jabbing is still way under the P4P level, and that could be what would make a difference in a match vs. GGG, whose jabbing is way better than Canelo's and although he also has issues with stamina, he never has to resort to getting rest and getting pounded on the ropes, to resume attacking.
