Comments Thread For: Olympians Appear Split on Headgear No Longer Being Used

RIO DE JANEIRO - Men are fighting without headgear for the first time in 36 years, making the sport debatably safer and undoubtedly more attractive to fans. But the most tangible consequence is gore: At least 10 boxers at the Rio Games have already incurred significant facial cuts in the first five days of the tournament.

It's better without the headgear, i get frustrated when i see the 96 olympics fights and all the clashes of heads because they just jump head first.

Having no head gear on improved the quality of boxing. It makes fighters less likely to rush in head first and it makes them more defensively responsible because they don't have that head gear to protect them.

Yeah, it is better....until they get cut due to having no headgear and have to fight again 2 days later with an injury (because this is how the amateur system works and that's why the headgear was worn to begin with.)

They inducted the headgear in 82 if i'm right and it was because concussions not cuts, they survived 80 years without the headgears.

I think the problem without the headgear is injuries (Cuts). Due to the schedule of the competition it would be unfair to a winner who suffered cuts to have to be eliminated due to it. Another thing is if a fight is close and one suffers a cut then judges might want to put the other fighter who hasnt sustain a cut through to the next round.

this is just fucking Aiba's plan to take over boxing. When a fighter has to fight one day and the next one, of course headgear is most likely to protect you from cuts.

Fighting with an injure is plain brutal.

It's better to watch now without the head gear. Boxers have to respect punching power a little more and they can't just wade into the opponent carelessly. They also have to watch out for head clashes.

Headgear was shown to lead to higher rates of concussions, but on the flip side getting your face cut up fckn blows too. When it comes to having to do multiple fights in a short span of time a cut can be a major blow to you in the later rounds. Glad I don't have to make the decision about which to use.
