Comments Thread For: Balderas Jr. Advances in Session 1 at Rio Olympics

With only one American boxer fighting in Sessions 1, Carlos Zenon Balderas Jr. did what was needed to take a 29-28 decision over Kazakstan's Berik Abdrakhmanov in the opening round of the men's lightweight (60kg.) division at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

I thought he won round 1 and 2 but lost the final one.

        The fight was close.
Round 1 could have gone either way. Balderas was busier so it gave the viewers the look that he dominated, but he missed plenty. The Kazakh landed several clean shots.
        Round 2 was for Balderas.
Round 3 was for the Kazakh.
I don't know how anyone can say that Balderas dominated the latter half of the fight when he clearly lost the third round.

I am not trying to discredit Balderas, but I have seen so many people give him too much credit. It was a close fight.
It depends on who you gave the first round to. Most gave it to Balderas I'm assuming.

Balderas has the best pro style out of any American fighter and may end up being the most marketable of the team. Promoters are definitely going to want to sign him.

Good start for team USA. Question I know most of these Olympians will highly sought after by all promoters and managers. But are their any particular that will garner the highest bid?

Balderas has a lot of star quality. I can see a lot of promoters lining up to sign him after the Olympics.

Solid win over a quality opponent for a first round.

The lightweight division is so loaded that there's no easy road to the medals.

He's in a very tough side of the draw because he will likely have to face the favorite Lazaro Alvarez in the quarterfinals. But if he gets by him, the Gold Medal is pretty much his.
