  • Comments Thread For: Frampton Glad Santa Cruz Fight Took Place at 126 Instead of 122

Years ago, Leo Santa Cruz and Carl Frampton were both junior featherweights. Santa Cruz had a world title. Frampton was pursuing a fight with him. He didn't get it until this past Saturday, with Santa Cruz now a featherweight titleholder and Frampton moving up to challenge for it.

Respect to both men for a great fight that people will remember. Hopefully we get knockdowns next fight to really ****e up the matchup and make it an all-time fight.

Both these men need to fight Rigondeaux though. Frampton showed enough speed, power, and boxing acumen that he has a chance. To have those kinds of tools to work with, but not want to challenge Rigo, makes no sense to me. If you had no shot, then sure, but Frampton can do a lot of things. It's a close fight. Rigondeaux has been dropped by far lesser fighters.

Same with Santa Cruz. The reach, the power, underrated speed and skills, great chin, endless stamina. He could really back down Rigondeaux and put the barrage on him. That's another close fight where Rigondeaux will have to fight back for extended periods or get overwhelmed. To have that skills that Santa Cruz has but not want to fight Rigondeaux, is again a blemish on his legacy. Fighting Rigondeaux would be a great way for Santa Cruz to right his legacy after this loss. Frampton could also shoot for legacy now against Rigo, and even if he loses, he will have the Santa Cruz rematch to get back on the winning track.

Certainly, whoever wins this rematch should fight Rigondeaux next. Donaire would also make a great fight.

And no one is talking about this, but what about Frampton-Mares? That would be an awesome fight, better than Mares-Santa Cruz I think.

Santa Cruz was too long and powerful for Mares. And had better stamina, better chin. Frampton is not as long, and not as powerful, as Santa Cruz. In that fight Mares would have equal power, and would be in range a lot more. That would be such a good style fight.

I had a feeling that he would be stronger with more energy at 126.

I agree, the excuse about there being no money in the Rigo fight!! Come on, in Belfast with sell out crowd, possibly PPV (although not sure Hearns and McGuigan are the best of mates) with Frampton's name to sell overseas (if you don't believe Rigo carries weight). That's money. Maybe not LSC type cash but at some point if you want legacy and not to hear "he ducked Rigo...", be genuinely recognised as the guy that fought all the best then you need to face him up. He can always fall back on LSC etc. Being beaten by Rigo does not end someone's career and can only enhance tremendously your career just for taking him on when all around run and hide.
