Comments Thread For: Jonathan Guzman Eyes Defense Against Lopez-Reynoso Winner

IBF Junior Featherweight Champion Jonathan "Salomon King" Guzman (22-0, 22 KOs) won't be taking any time to rest on his newly acquired laurels. The Dominican KO artist won his first world championship yesterday (Wednesday, July 20) by stopping former #1 contender Shingo Wake in 11 brutal rounds in Osaka, Japan. Guzman's power was simply too much for Wake, who fell four times before the end came at 2:16 from merciful referee Wayne Hedgpeth.

I like that attitude, but Rigondeaux would wipe his ars with Guzman.

I like his attitude as well. I wish Joan Guzman was as hungry and as discipline as him. Anyhow, yes I think he needs more time to refine his skill set before he even makes an attempt to step in with Rigo. Rigo is just too nice for him right now. The only chance I would see for Guzman against Rigo is his power..if and that's a big IF he happens to catch Rigo at the right moment and capitalizes on it....but that's tough given how much of a master Rigo is defensively but you never know.

I think the power is a little over rated too. Wake hadn't really beaten anyone of note. He was also tall, gangly and fairly unbalanced. Any solid shot was going to knock him down or make his gloves touch the canvas. The rest of Guzman's opponents were cab drivers, taco vendors, stiffs, cans, and journeymen. Rigondeaux would have all stoppages as well if he faced such bad opposition.
