Ala Ghasoun, a boxer from Syria, quit Saturday the world boxing championship taking place in Azerbaijan this week for refusing to compete against an Israeli rival. The bout between Ghasoun and the Israeli fighter was scheduled for the first round. Participation in the tournament was a precondition in qualifying for the upcoming 2016 Olympic games that will take place in August in Rio de Janeiro.

This is absurd! Just because someone is of a certain country does not mean they conform with their beliefs! I am of Middle Eastern decent and I will always treat a human being as a human being, I don't care if they are Israeli, ***********, or American. The diversity in boxing is one of the many factors that make it a beautiful sport; not fighting someone just because they are from a certain place is just pure discrimination.

Read the article; the fighter says he was pulled form the fight because the Syria doesn't recognize Israel, and fighting him would be a vague recognition of Israel as a state, so the Syrian Sports Federation pulled him.
