Comments Thread For: Beterbiev's Promoter Targets Sergey Kovalev For Early 2017
One of the ***els of Groupe Yvon Michel, light heavyweight contender Artur Beterbiev (9-0, 9KOs) will resume action later tonight at the Bell Centre in Montreal after a year's absence.
Beterbiev lost respect in Russia after he first droped Russian passport and became Canadian and than refused to fight Kovalev when he was given an opportunity. That was a personal issue between the two starting from their amateur boxing. Kovalev was accusing Beterbiev of gift decisions against him (thanks to heavy financial support that Beterbiev was enjoing) in domestic fights for place in Olimpic team. Both talked tough publicly but Kovalev walked the walk when he offered Beterbiev a chance to fight for his belts and chechen worrior (supposed) refused to take that opportunity. He's handlers said that he needs more pro experience. That was a lame excuse after all the tough talk from Beterbiev side. Both have all the experience there is - very well schooled fighters with stellar (Beterviev in particular) amateur careers.
Kovalev is an example of a hard working peoples champion. He worked his way up without promoter fighting for shelter and food (Egis his manager was paying) and now he's the man in light heavy

Honestly, I have to say Beterbiev hasn't earned that Kovalev fight just yet. We all know he is good and all, but he needs to beat someone decent to justify fighting the #1 guy in the division. He hasn't beaten any top 10 fighters, or heck probably even top 20 just yet.
Should be a fun fight when it goes down. Looking forward to it & maybe one of the top 3 or so fights I most wanna see right now. Wouldn't be surprised if both guys come off the floor.
