  • Comments Thread For: Golden Boy Exploring a Return To The Olympic Auditorium

For decades the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles was a central hub of boxing (along with many other events) but for the past decade it's been a Korean-American church (Glory Church of Jesus Christ), but they could be re-opening it's door for one night as a boxing venue.

The place was built for boxing, the only bad seats were the corners. I always liked ground floor, just under the balcony. Ringside was dangerous as people threw money after good fights, lots of 50 cent pieces. Coinage would bounce and roll across the ring, into peoples faces. I've seen fighters try to pick up coins with their gloves on in there. I loved it.

The grand olympic was hands down one of the best little venues for boxing, it wasnt that big but ever view was great and you felt like a big arena. It also had the old time feel too it all those old timers fought there.

I watched Indian and Little Red there, Bobby Chacon, Johnnie Owens, Mondo Muniz, El Puas Olivares. It cost one dollar if you mentioned the TV ad, it didn't matter who was boxing, the parking cost more than the entry. Famous boxers were scattered in the crowd, and always got called to the ring before the main event. It was a big attraction with wrestling and roller derby too, but that wasn't me.

yeah man. I never saw a live fight in the building but it always looked like a great atmosphere on TV.

Here are the only pics I could find, I used to drive by there years ago when I worked in DTLA. the problem is the parking and the crackheads and transients from skid row harassing people, if you found a parking chances are you had to walk far too and usually its dangerous as hell at night.

The grand olympic is really sacred ground for any Boxing fan, its one of the last true boxing arenas around.

Im telling you the arena is the best for boxing, It could hold like 7,500 for boxing events.

Stallone with James and Scott Caan at the last HBO boxing event before the Korean Church bought it. This was the Fernando Vargas vs Vanderpool fight, and on the undercard was Pacquiao vs Lucero,
