  • Comments Thread For: Veteran Middleweight Contender Matthew Macklin Calls It A Career

Birmingham's Matthew Macklin has told Sky Sports that he has decided to retire. The three-time world title challenger bows out on a four-fight winning streak. His last defeat was a 10th-round KO loss to Jorge Sebastian Heiland in Dublin in November 2014, but he regrouped and out-pointed Brian Rose for the vacant IBF Inter-Continental middleweight title in his last contest.

This is a guy who was able to fight Sturm, Martinez, and Golovkin. He damn near got Quillin too, when Pete opted for Konecny instead. Overall, very good career. It's just a shame we never got the UK MW tourney with Mack, Lee, Barker, and Murray.

Good career. Gave us some great fights, should have been a MW titlist, fought most the guys who mattered at MW during the last 5 or so years. Perfect timing to call it quits as he has looked poor in his recent fights

        Happy retirement

Respect to Macklin for going out on a decent W that he coulda parlayed into bigger & better things as per is usually the case, but didn't. Solid & respectable career.

He was the one to open the door for Golovkin. Props to him just for that. Plus he beat Sturm and gave Martinez a damn good fight.

For Golovkin haters Macklin is just another bum. But as most posters noted here - he was a solid mw contender with a respectable career.

Macklin was probably chilling out on a beach in Marbella and just thought "**** this".

No point in boxing on against domestic guys. I hope he enjoys his retirement.
