  • Comments Thread For: Chris Eubank Sr. Stands Firm Against Critics Who Want Boxing Ban

Boxing should not be banned following the brain injury suffered by Nick Blackwell because the sport would become "more dangerous" if forced underground, says former world champion Chris Eubank Snr.

It's a pointless debate on banning boxing but i'm all for ever increased safety and I think that Davies , Lockett and the ref got caught up in the moment and were wrong.Davies says Nick was always there, he wasn't and had his eye injury not have been so bad the fight would have probably have continued taking huge punishment ! Lockett said the plan was for Nick to come strong late , he had nothing left Victor had every opportunity to stop this one sided beating three rounds before he did but some how saw it fit for this battering to continue.....guys this was hard to watch and I totally agree with Eubank sr. when he asked why is the referee not stopping this !!!

I see it the other way. I agree it became obvious Blackwell was never going to win the fight but I don't think there was a point the ref could stop it. Blackwell never looked like he was in trouble and didn't take a sustained series of shots. Eubank sr was of course wanting the ref to stop the fight he wanted his son to win. But the two main blitzes on the ropes involved Jr throwing a lot but landing little. You could perhaps use it as an excuse to stop an otherwise uncompetitive fight but it would have been just that, an excuse and plenty of people would have been mad at a premature stoppage.

But I agree, if we can learn lessons to improve fighter safety, we should. Standing eight counts work in kickboxing and the amateurs if I'm not mistaken too? If too little is coming back, give them a count and that way at least intervening isn't robbing someone the chance of winning the fight even if they don't appear badly hurt.

They used to do standing eight counts but it affected the three KD rule I believe. Not the worst thing if a guy is knocked silly and goes down from dodging or off balance the fight should be stopped, but also the ref should be aware of the time left in the rd. Give the guy chance to make it the next rd and make a comeback at least. But I would be for standing eights again.
