Comments Thread For: Olympic Boxers To Have No Headgear in Rio, Says AIBA

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND For the first time in more than 30 years, male boxers won't be wearing protective headgear at the Olympics.

The International Boxing Association, known as AIBA, adopted the change for amateur fighters three years ago, and the decision was widely considered a formality for this year's games in Rio de Janeiro.

WBC be real quick. Announce that from now on your boxers will wear head gears. WBC is working really hard to protect its boxers. Lmao!

Conclusion: Let the bytchies turn their brains into jello for all we care.

If is the study concludes concussion is higher with headgear, why let the females use them still? Shouldn't headgear be abandoned across the board?

There are two appealing things with pros being in the Olympics. The first is the tear ups that would sometimes insure during the 3 rounds and the other is we might actually get to see fights that we probably won't at Professional level. ie Postol vs Crawford.

I think there's strong evidence to show there's little to no difference in brain trauma with the headgear. Brain damage in boxing isn't caused by one big blow, it's an accumulation of blows over a long time. The real problem for a tournament situation is cuts and head clashes generally. When you have to fight 4 or 5 times over two weeks that's a serious issue.

They haven't abandoned the headgear because of any of this however, they've done it because they want it to look more like the pros and get a bigger audience.

The only benefit to headgear is less cuts & grazes.

Not shocking, have been hearing that the headgear isn't as protective as you would think
