Where Have the All Tough Guys Gone?

It’s been twenty-one years today since Marvin Hagler separated Thomas Hearns from his senses in one of the most intense and exciting fights in boxing history. The great fight scribe Pat Putnam called the Hagler vs. Hearns fight “raw violence.” Boxing has always been about the dark side of man and those that climb into the squared circle have always been a rare breed. Not just anybody can make a living by taking off their shirt and beating somebody else up. [details]

Like yrrej, I think there are still some...

In addition to those mentioned by him:

There's the Barrios who fought Popo. The guy was always on Popo's face. And, Juan Diaz may not carry a type of punch that would accentuate his toughness but he's one tough hombre; he's always in there. Darchinyan's relative rawness requires that he be tough-- he nearly always takes a lot just to tee off with his old reliable. What I've seen of that comer from the Philippines named Rey Bautista is that the guy has really baaad intentions and he has shown in that fight in Mexico against Espino that he can pick himself up from an early round kd then wade in to win. That's heart. To me, that's toughness.

I must admit, however, that none of the above comes close to Marvin Hagler. But then, who does?
