  • Comments Thread For: From Writer To Ruler - The Rapid Rise of Peter Nelson

By Jake Donovan - Four years ago, Peter Nelson was a gifted journalist presented with a dream opportunity to be part of the HBO family that has long served as the most powerful entity in boxing.

As of December 1, he now commands the throne.

News was quick to spread throughout the industry that Nelson was named Executive Vice President of HBO Sports on Tuesday. The news of his advancement from vice president of programming came as little surprise, other than the timing of the move as he assumes the reins while current president Ken Hershman is in the final month of his tenure before his previously announced resignation takes effect by year’s end.

“Peter Nelson is the ideal choice to spearhead our groundbreaking programming initiatives as well as our commitment to world class boxing, which have made HBO Sports an acclaimed franchise for the network,” said Michael Lombardo, the president of HBO Programming who hired Nelson in 2011. “He has a comprehensive understanding of boxing, a key programming staple for our subscribers for more than four decades. The media really loves this guy because he's one of them. So expect the same ole same ole HBO circle jerking from the media. HBO has done a great job buying off the media. They hired Nelson, a former boxing writer, Thomas Hauser, and even Frank Rich from the NYT after a couple of articles slamming HBO. I also remember Max Kellerman being critical of HBO during his first stint at ESPN. Search any of Hauser's old articles pre-HBO about HBO, specifically his three part series: HBO and the state of boxing.

Can you imagine Skip Bayless being hired by the NFL as a consultant? You can not trust the boxing media. Eveyone has an agenda. Even Jake Donovan from boxingscene was hired by PBC. They can say it doesn't affect their opinions and they way they report but they're lying. Non-HBO writers are paid for by the promoters. Some are rewarded with cash, gifts, access or even food. Top Rank flying reporters out to cover their fights and lodging them. That's a conflict of interest. Remember the Gabe Montoya Interbox controversy? The boxing media can't be trusted.

This is probably the most important story of the day and nobody is paying attention. But a couple of months down the line they'll wonder why things are the way they are and start blaming people who aren't responsible
