Comments Thread For: Derry Mathews To Fight For a World Title In 2016

Derry Mathews is set for a major world title fight in the near future.

The news of the likeable Liverpool lightweight’s turn up in fortunes came after it was announced that he had given up his WBA interim title.

Mathews, who has been linked with a fight against WBO champion Terry Flanagan since the Mancunian won the title back in July, is scheduled to fight over eight rounds on December 19 at the Manchester Arena, live and exclusive on BoxNation

Win, lose or draw Dirty Derry's fights are rarely boring. I'll be rooting for him.

Flanagan, duh. And Terry will win handily. I like Derry, but Flanagan is all wrong for him.

Hmmm. Derry Mathews was supposed to fight Barroso for his title, but something big might be coming up, so Mathews vacates his title and starts training for an eight rounder... on an undercard.. in another title run. Barroso sounds like some sort of land mine, and him being made mandatory shook Mathews, or his promoters at least. It's like they want to test the water with Mitchell. The man has heart, he won't say no, but it's not a good plan. If Mitchell wins, then Derry looks lame for ducking Barroso and if Barroso KO's Mitchell it won't be clear if Linares didn't soften Mitchell up. I just want to see Barroso get his shot after being threatened with it for almost a year.

"I'm the first interim in champion to have a mandatory"

And they said Derry Mathew would never get into the history books.

He's obviously fighting Terry Flanagan for the WBO world title.

Derry Mathews has pretty much got the Terry Flanagan WBO lightweight title shot in his back pocket for 2016. Both are Frank Warren fighters so it is in house and easy to make. The WBA interim belt is nonsense so i did not blame him for vacating that piece of crap against some intriguing but completely unknown south American guy . That was a business decision to vacate as he has got a direct title shot at i expect the Manchester Arena for a bigger payday.

I was only interested in Barroso since you guys keep bringing his name up. Mitchell is the third UK fighter scheduled to fight him and I never heard of him before. I guess Derry wants to keep it in house and lose to Flanagan instead of this Barroso, or do you think he has a chance?

What the hell are you on about? I have no idea who Barrosso even is

Derry Matthews got offered a world title shot and took it. As would any boxer in his position. I don't get what agenda you're trying to push here.
