  • Comments Thread For: Miguel Cotto, The WBC, and Much Ado About Nothing

By Cliff Rold - Oscar De La Hoya is calling it a disgrace.

Miguel Cotto is going to call it extra cash in his pocket.

Everyone else shouldn’t give a damn.

In a fight that might be struggling to generate the box office it needs to cover costs, the WBC’s ruling Tuesday that they are stripping Cotto over an issue of sanctioning fees and step aside fees to Gennady Golovkin made headlines. It’s giving everyone something to talk about and that can’t be a bad thing. That one of the promoters can holler ‘disgrace!’ is fine. It might mean some venom at the final pre-fight press conference Wednesday.

ESPN began extended coverage of the fight Tuesday. They’ll have plenty of footage if that happens, as will this site, Ring’s site, Fight News, Yahoo, USA Today, and just about every other outlet covering the event. It adds a little extra personality to a fight between two exciting guys in the ring who don’t have much personality between them.

Here’s the reality of the situation.

Nothing of substance really changed. [Click Here To Read More]

Cotto was a disgrace to the MW division, and most will remember it that way

He has and always will be a paper MW champ. A guy who never truly fought at MW 160.

And if Canelo wins, and claims he isn't a MW, that linage title is about as worthless as Canelo would be if he fought GGG.

Canelo, Cotto, they are both soft serve guys who thought the MW division was a safe place, and then boom, GGG name started o get known, and now the media is digging Canelo and Cotto.

    Today Cotto bowed out.

Is Canelo man enough to live up to his bravado, or is he just not the Mexican warrior they sold him to be,

How did Cotto allegedly get away with not paying GGG's step aside fee when GGG stepped aside??? Supposedly thats $800k of this $1.1M Cotto owes. Seems like that is some non-standard **** & he'd be needing to pay GGG once GGG agrees. I know if I'm stepping aside I wanna get paid BEFORE I officially step aside. GGG should sue Cotto or the WBC for his $800k if he's legit owed that for stepping aside. That might be the real controversy here is GGG is getting f#cked over for almost a million dollars.

Can he sue? I'm not sure he can if the title isn't up for grabs. And did cotto even agree to pay the step aside fee? I'm starting to think the WBC assumed he would do what they wanted him to do and he simply chose not to. Point being Golovkin didn't actually step aside from anything if Cotto isn't defending the belt. The belt is officially vacant.

If GGG didn't already step aside my assumption is there is no Canelo vs Cotto PPV fight planned for Saturday. GGG shoulda been the one fighting vs Cotto this Saturday (or he should have the belt already if Cotto declined the fight) if not for the $800k agreement to not pursue his mandatory status. So my assumption would be GGG is owed $800k by someone. Its just a matter of if the WBC or Cotto or ??? is obligated to pay him.

Plus if what you are saying is true than Canelo shouldn't be able to win the belt at all. The belt should be GGG's since he's never stepped aside & Cotto has decided to drop the belt at the end of the day.

Would be funny if GGG the ex street fighter entered the ring before the fight and beat the **** out of both Cotto and Canelo. Then put that baby face smile back on and give interviews: "This is my box, my belt, big drama show. They were not being good boys." But seriously, the fight is turning into a circus act. I wonder if Canelo bothers to drain to 155 any more, what Cotto does if he doesn´t and how this WBC mess affects the PPVs. A lot of things still to go wrong before the fight.

The WBC are the one's that ****ed up here, no one else. Why has the situation gone this far without step aside fees, etc being agreed. The WBC should have stripped Cotto long ago if things weren't agreed and what is De La Hoya crying about, he's lucky that Canelo still has the chance to win a MW title this weekend. Plus it's starting to become obvious why Richard Schaefer was the Golden Boy mouthpiece for so long as De La Hoya is starting to appear more and more punch drunk (or just plain drunk) with every passing press release.

At the end of the day, the WBC ****ed up and trying to strong arm Cotto into paying $1.1 million with less than a week to go is just embarrassing. Plus as the article states, I'm pretty sure they'd still try and throw some kind of belt at a rematch if there were some sanctioning fees in it for them.
