Comments Thread For: Povetkin's Promoter: Wilder's Camp Does Not Want It!

Andrei Ryabińsky, who promotes Olympic gold medal winner Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs), is going to do everything possible to secure his fighter the mandatory shot against WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (35-0, 34 KOs).

The World Boxing Council ordered the fight at their recent convention. They approved Wilder's request to have a third voluntary fight on January 16th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

He says they don't want the fight, then says he's 90% sure the fight is happening in America next summer.

Guess well be seeing Wilder-Povetkin in May. Nice.

I'm encouraged by the Glazkov matchup, that's a decent fight/tune-up for someone like Povetkin. Hopefully it will happen.

Povetkin's people are following the Amir Khan method of trolling yourself right out of a fight you probably would have gotten.

I think Wilder's people wanted him to get in a couple more fights, which is exactly what they're doing. In the next 6 months we'll find out if they're actually ducking.

This fight will never happen. Wilder will pull a Quillen and vacate the belt sometime in March or April after it becomes obvious that he cannot avoid the fight any longer.

He will then fight Chris Arreola while calling out Klitschko and continuing to claim that he is the best heavyweight in the world.

Wasn't it Povetkin's team that asked for an extension because they wouldn't be ready at the start of the year?

                Dummies will eat this up

No true world champion needs four or five voluntary fights against weak opposition before they fight a quality opponent. Any time a fighter wants to get in a couple more fights before fighting a mandatory opponent, that means that he and he team know that he was never that good to begin with. A prime example would be Bob Arum delaying a fight between Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr. and Sergio Martinez for two years to give Chavez Jr. a chance to get in a couple more fights.

I don't think there's much doubt they want him to develop more. The Chavez comparison is a poor one but I don't see any problem with the trainers/managers wanting him to improve. He came up quick and he needs it. If you just want to piss on him, that's not hard to do. But, for where he's at in the sport I think being active and getting ready for a big fight sounds smart. It seems that you just want him to lose and don't like the idea of him developing while the Pov fight looms.
