For these guys it sounds like Ward was GGG's mandatory at 168 (for some belts which do not exist) and GGG asked for a cw of whatever and ducked Ward and lost his inexistent 168 titles in the process.

But the bare facts are actually different: Golovkin (who holds two titles at 160) is the mandatory (at 160) for the Cotto/Canelo fight winner (who will hold two titles at 160). It's simple and it's for real.

The question isn't "Then why a catch-weight for Ward if not for Cotto/Canelo winner"
The better question is why is GGG willing to fight everybody in the 168 division at 168 pounds EXCEPT Ward ?

well that could be the case....but the simple facts are golovkin is a middleweight fighting at the correct weight.....canelo and cotto are also fighting in the middleweight division and if either one holds a belt at middleweight they defend it at middleweight....so if a fighter is 159 and half they still have to defend it....so it's not calling shots you lunatic it's called being a middleweight champion and defending your title against other middleweights.....cotto and canelo will not be able to call the shots because golovkin is getting bigger and bigger in the public eye and is the most feared man in boxing now.....you only had to hear the support for him to know he has serious bargaining power now...trile GGG will take over the PPV and people will pay to see him fight....who can beat him at middleweight ? And I'm sure if the American public had to choose a Mexican canelo over golovkin I will be very surprised

I have to laugh at those people who keep bringing up Ward into a conversation about Golovkin when Ward is on the verge of approving a multi fight deal with HBO in the light heavy division with an eye toward Kovalev. Get over it, Ward has moved on. You should too.

Because ward is 172 fighter which is a light heavyweight and golovkin is 159 which is a middleweight so a catchweight is fair before one will have to come down and vice versa.....cotto and canelo are fighting in the same division as golovkin so how can you say it has to be 155 or 156 when the middleweight limit is 160 lol....kidneys

Yup!!! Frankly I don't even understand why they're wasting their $$$$ paying the fees to even fight for the belt??? It's going to be a HUGE fight and if it's even REMOTELY competitive (Which it will) There is going to be a REAMATCH...They give two craps about belts. If that was the case Lara wouldn't still be a champion.

GGG has bargaining power again bums like Lemieux. He's a nobody to the Floyds, Mannys, Cottos, and Canelos of the world. And he can either bend over. Or, fight Andy Lee in one of these epic "unification" fights selling cheap tickets and discounted PPV rates.
