Nathan Cleverly suffered a points defeat to Poland's Andrzej Fonfara in Chicago as his bid to earn a world title fight took a major blow.

The 28-year-old Welshman looked to suffer a broken nose midway through the contest, and the impressive Fonfara took the unanimous verdict of the judges.

The Chicago-based fighter was given the verdict by 115-113 from one judge and by 116-112 from two.

I thought Fonfara would have him out in 7 but Cleverly looked like the better fighter until his nose was broke. I think he would have won were it not for that. Not to take away from Andy's win, he broke Cleverly's nose and earned the victory. If there were a rematch, I'd probably pick Cleverly though.

115-113 is a joke. Nathan had some success early on but he got his arse handed to him over all.

Makes you think about just how hard Sergei Kovalev punches that Cleverly was half dead at the end of the 3rd yet he took a beating in this fight and never looked like he would go down. Other than the rest of the round after the broken nose he never even looked hurt. It's not like Fonfara is a light puncher.

That's exactly what I was thinking

Every punch kov landed whether on the arms or the head visually shook cleverlys balance

            He's a proper freak

As for the cleverly fonfara fight it was a great scrap . Don't know why clev didn't try and give himself more space .

He was nailing him with every jab he threw on the outside , seemed to smother his own work at times

Fonfara vs Kov would be a good matchup because of Fonfara's chin. But while Fonfara is a decent puncher, Kov is a concussive puncher.
