Comments Thread For: Golovkin, K2 Firm That Cotto Title Fight Would Be at '160'

New York - While Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KO’s) is the lineal champion at middleweight, the consensus is that Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KO’s) is the best fighter at the weight.

Golovkin is the mandatory challenger to Cotto’s WBC title and it was announced at the press conference to kick off the pay-per-view fight between Golovkin and David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KO’s), that the WBC has mandated the winner of that fight to face the winner of the Cotto vs. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KO’s) clash that is happening on November 21st.

I get that feeling too. The WBC has always been willing to bend the rules for rich or high profile fighters.

I have the exact opposite feeling. If Cotto were to beat Canelo I see no possible scenario that Cotto fights GGG within the next 1-2 fights. Canelo on the otherhand is a very proud Mexican, so while Golden Boy might play around at first talking about Canelo vs ____ and GGG can wait, at the end of that day that pride will kick in and he'll tell his EMPLOYEE Golden Boy to make the fight.

I don't see the WBC backing away from this because this time I'm certain K2 has got this in writing from the WBC (which is why K2/GGG allowed for this fight to even happen for the belt). If it's in writing, the WBC isn't going to want to get sued (they've lost millions of dollars before for stuff like this and they're not going to want that to happen again).

Cotto/Canelo can certainly try to negotiate a catch weight, and that's fine. If Golovkin doesn't agree, then Cotto/Canelo would be forced to go to a purse bid where it would be the full 160 pounds.

Well GGG ain't getting Cotto for sure if its gotta be at 160. I don't think Cotto wouldn't fight GGG before, but if it isn't a catchweight there is no chance Cotto will fight GGG imo.

And I'd even say with Canelo's catchweighing lately that even he's possibly out with this news with his 155 fights lately. GGG would be smart to just fight at whatever weight Canelo or Cotto was cool fighting him at cuz the upside for him is great & I think most would favor GGG in either fight.

Maybe GGG sells 1M PPV's though & he can call his shot & Cotto or Canelo will bend cuz the money will be worth it, but if the GGG vs Lemieux PPV does 400k or less I think he might have just wasted his time.

no way. GGG was killing canelo in sparring with head gear. they stopped the session. mosley was there to confirm what happend. alvarez is'nt even getting in there with GGG no matter what he says in from of a camera.
