Comments Thread For: Matthew Macklin on Weight Decision, Future, World Title

Birmingham’s Matthew Macklin revealed that he is heading back down to 154lbs at a press conference on Tuesday, a move that has surprised a lot of boxing fans and pundits. He will feature on Eddie Hearn's October 17 bill at the Second City's Barclaycard Arena, taking on Jason Welborn at 154.

The former three-time world title challenger has not fought at light-middleweight since losing to Jamie Moore by 10th-round KO in 2006; he partially blamed the rigours of chipping the weight away when reflecting back on the loss. [Click Here To Read More]

Andy Lee barely made his move to 154 work, if at all, so likely a misguided move from Macklin here.

Yeah, but Andy looks too thin & frail at 160lbs, 154lbs was just a bad idea. Atleast Mack started off at 154lbs. It's too bad we never got the Duddy/Macklin fight back before they both stepped up to world level. I bet it would've been a great fight.

In addition to Duddy, I'm miffed that we lost Barker to injuries so soon. I was really looking forward to an all-British Isles round robin between him, Murray, Lee, Saunders and Macklin.

Good luck to him, a hard working humble boxer with "the luck of the Irish". Hope he gets his title at 154.

One of my favorite episodes of Gloves Off. Four fighters that made every bit of since to fight one another and none of them ever happened. I think we'll still get Macklin/Lee, long after it mattered the most. Makes you appreciate Frank making the Saunders/Eubank fight when he did.

Macklin was finished a long time ago. The Sergio Martinez fight was his last hurrah.

Why on earth does he think moving down in weight is going to benefit him? If I remember correctly, the weight was one of the reasons he got cleaned out by Jamie Moore. He was dehydrated and totally spent by the end of that fight which must've been a decade ago now.
