  • Comments Thread For: James Toney's Career Likely Over With Comeback Loss

Former champion James Toney, 46-years-old, is far from the fighter that many experts once considered to be a pound-for-pound great.

On Saturday night at the Chase Hotel in St. Louis, Toney snapped a near two-year layoff to face what seemed like a safe opponent in heavyweight Charles Ellis (10-3-1, 8 KOs).

    Not safe enough.

toney should'nt have ever blown up that big. light heavy shou'd've been as far up with his frame.

Toney was one hell of a fighter at his best. Sucks to see this, but it happens far too often. The best often take way too long to realize how far they've fallen.

            boxing sucks.

            you have to ask:

"how do these guys get fights?"
"why do these guys get fights?"

the answers are troubling. shot fighters get offers because people are willing to sacrifice their dignity to try and make a few grand. shot fighters take offers often because they are broke and brain damaged.

toney was a very solid cruiserweight, and even a decent HW. he had a great, great chin, a style that was well suited for fighting bigger guys, and power that wasn't bone shattering, but that carried into higher weights.
