It is a clever preemptive strike by Duva/Kovalev/HBO. Beterbiev is climbing the rankings and if he keeps winning he will be the mandatory for Kovalev, that might lead to a purse bid where we will get a similar situation to Stevenson.
Also Beterbiev is still a little green in the pro ranks, every other fight will make him better and more dangerous, give him more experience, but I think Haymon/Michel also has no problem with the fight since Beterbiev isnt a big draw yet, risk is very high but the rewards are huge.
I think it was the plan all along, to get Beterbiev as a shield to protect Stevenson and Haymon's other "etablished" fighters like Fonfara who make him more money and/or would stand no chance against the Krusher.
High risk, extremely high reward, but it's a guy that already beat Kovalev in the amateurs, much better than feeding Stevenson or Fonfara to him.
I personally think that Beterbiev is the most dangerous fight out there for Kovalev, it will be a huge fight in Russia if it gets made.Comment

Man, Beterbiev ain't messing around, he's already going for the throne by beating the top guy how Rigo did with relatively few fights. I like it, reallllyyy hope this happens.Comment

With rematch clause?
I guess Duva knows that Beterbiev is a different type of ball game so she wants a chance at take back the belts if things go wring for them.
But whatever. I just hope it happens. And I think there's a good chance that it will happen.Comment

You're nothing better than them. Only difference is that you aren't Haymon/PBC fanboys but HBO fanboys.
And to be honest even if they are annoying too, I see much more rarely PBC/Haymon fanboys openly want HBO to fall and make bad numbers. That's a thing I see almost just on HBO fanboys' side.
Wanting your favourite sport to do bad number just because you look Haymon as an arch enemy. smh...Comment

This fight would still do well in the States, in Brooklyn, but I suppose Russia makes more sense. I just want there to be [real] drug testing for this fight. A number of posters suspect Kov (apparently he's too thin to have KO power), I'm fairly certain he's clean. Beterbiev on the other hand, I have suspected of juicing, so out of personal interest (and athletic fairness), I'd like to see if either looks a shell of himself with some proper VADA testing.Comment
