Comments Thread For: Hopkins: GGG-Lemieux Could Be Longer Hagler-Hearns

On the night of October 17th at the Madison Square Garden, a middleweight unification bout takes place between Gennady Golovkin and David Lemieux. For Bernard Hopkins of Golden Boy Promotions - which promotes Lemieux - the Garden will always be a special place for him.

On the night of September 29th, 2001, he became the undisputed middleweight champion by stopping Felix Trinidad in twelve rounds. Like Trinidad did before that fateful night, Golovkin comes into this bout undefeated and with a fearsome reputation as an offensive force.

Hopkins is right that's the first fight I thought of when this got made. It's going to be rock em sockem robots and pure excitement for however long it goes. Has a chance to be fight of the year or knockout of the year. Hell it could be both. This a fight where I don't mind paying because you know you going to get your money's worh. This will not be boring and nobody is running or holding.

I doubt it's a Hagler-Hearns type of a fight. GGG will pressure Lemieux and force him to try to pot shot from outside. Lemieux won't land near as often as Hagler and Hearns did on each other. Golovkin's defense will prove slicker than some expect. He doesn't need to focus much on defense normally, but with a puncher like Lemieux he will. But Lemieux is mostly a one handed fighter and GGG will take away his left hook.

oh come on hopkins i understand it is two guys who can punch but they are really trying to make their golden boy fighter lemieux out to be something hes not. i just dont see how he can make it competitive baring a lucky punch hes basically a not as good ggg thats what he is. i can understand why people think it might be a crazy brawl with both fighters going down early but putting them up on a hearns hagler level is a bit ridiculous

put david in the same category as either fighter...smh..

david will eat a stiff jab bc he is not a shoulder to shoulder type of fighter he wants his space unless u are on the ropes..he doesnt know how to deal with a stiff jab just look at rubio pumping his and nothign else until he ko'd him..ggg might not be andre ward and he might be ducking ward, but he is levels above david..and fireworks is not a one man show and one man shows are not worthy of ppv

GGG has been hit a lot by lesser fighters. And his defense has been questionable. He is now fighting a guy who might hit harder then him and clearly hits harder then any fighter he has ever faced. A guy who doesn't need to string a lot of punches to put you down or hurt you. David has true one punch power. If GGG doesn't clean up his defense and gets hit with punches other guys have hit him with he will go down. But the flip side is also true. GGG deserves to be the favorite because of the experience. But this is about who can get to who's chin first. It's going to be a shoot out. You just can't count out a guy with freakish power. And that's what David has.

Well.. at least it's better than Kellerman's comparisons of the current middleweight division to that of the 80s and his likening of Canelo/GGG to Hagler/Hearns.
