Comments Thread For: Frampton, McGuigan on Tapping Irish-American Market

Boxing is a sport in which ethnic and nationalistic loyalty is valuable, in which many countries rally behind their fighters and those of certain descent in the United States will support their brethren.

It’s been that way with, say, Polish fighters in Chicago and the New York/New Jersey area. And Carl Frampton and his promoter, Barry McGuigan, hope it will be that way in America for the junior-featherweight titleholder from Northern Ireland.

        Frampton is an Anglo-Saxon name.

        It's not a Celtic name.

True, but there is plenty of mixing amongst the four nations on the islands over the years I doubt anyone cares as long as they're assimilated.

Off the top, Martin Murray would be a Scot based on his surname or Frankie Gavin being Irish.

True. And Froch is of German descent (not Polish). The name "Price" has Welsh roots, and "Cleverly" is another Anglo-Saxon name.

My respect for McGuigan disappeared when he refused to fight Brian Mitchell & Azuma Nelson!

True, but most Irish-Americans are Protestant like Frampton (their ancestors loyal to the British crown).

In the American imagination, to be Irish is to be Catholic. The data, however, is clear: most Irish-Americans are not Catholic, and Irish-Americans make up a minority of Catholics in America. Nearly half of Irish-Americans are Protestant; a third are Catholic.

All that to one side, El Paso is an odd place for Frampton to fight.
