Comments Thread For: Geeking Out For The Creed Trailer

By Cliff Rold - Sometimes it’s okay to give in.

Anyone who observes boxing long enough is likely to get a little jaded. Fights and fighters come and go. Classics are spaced out by mediocre to good action along the way. Bad judging, bad refereeing, and prima donna behavior keeping major events on slow burn for years can eat away at enthusiasm.

There are still moments when it’s like when we were kids. That burning feeling of anticipation for Joe Louis appearances described in the Autobiography of Malcolm X, exemplified by Frank Sinatra being so desperate to be at Joe Frazier-Muhammad Ali I that he took pictures for Life Magazine, can’t ever really be extinguished.

When boxing gets it right, it does it better than anything else in sports.

Beyond the ring, one arena where boxing has managed to produce and in some ways help to foster love for the game has been on the silver screen. Whether it’s in seedy old black and whites full of fixes and little guys standing up the mob, little Jackie Cooper (and later Ricky Schroeder) screaming that they ‘want the champ,’ or Amy Adams stealing the show on the porch in the Mickey Ward story, boxing’s greater culture has been undoubtedly influenced by its Hollywood projections. Surprisingly, a modern boxing movie that looks pretty good. Michael B. Jordan has a lot of potential in his acting career, I thought he did real well in Fruitville Station. Southpaw also looks good but 50 cent kind of killed the vibe for me. Nonetheless, Gyllenhall is a good actor too. Creed seems to focus more on the boxing and sport genre while Southpaw has more of a drama feel to it. Both should be good though and good for boxing. Rocky series brought a lot of fans to the sport.

I liked the trailer, but what I found odd was that Creed fights Rosado(Middleweight) and Bellew(Cruiserweight)?

Only people who know boxing would be able to tell. Rocky has always played fast and loose with weight classes. There is a visible difference in Rocky's weight throughout the movies but he always fights at heavyweight.

"People die in the ring. Your daddy died in the ring." Lol *cringes* so cheesy.

I don't like the lead actor, nor the supporting cast. I can tell it's not my type of movie. I'll stick with Southpaw.

The Creed movie concept was my idea, I posted it in this forum a few years ago and people were saying there could never be a "black Rocky" etc..

Good to see my idea developed into something that, judging by the trailer, looks set to very well be the next generation's Rocky, with all the accolades and critical acclaim around the corner.

yeah, I tend to find most boxing movies a bit too cliché for my taste

It looks good, the rocky timeline is a bit weird though, 3,4 and 5 don't fit with 1,2, balboa and creed . 3 and 4 are great movies in their own right though.

                  Its not your "idea"

Theres plenty of people who always kicked around the idea for a Creed movie since Rocky 4. If ever there was a spinoff the most obvious direction was always a creed story, the director of this film got the idea from his father who was one of these people.

You were probably one of the first to post the idea on forums though, but to say the concept was YOUR idea is abit silly lol

Seems virtually identical to my idea judging by the trailer. I said Creed's son would specifically seek out Rocky to train him (I think I said for his first world championship fight but I'm not sure if that part happens in the movie yet, although that's by the by.)

At the time of Rocky 4, times were quite different. Even when I made the post a few years back, I remember quite a few detractors claiming that there could never be a "black Rocky" and that any Rocky movie or spin-off had to based on a "white guy" etc.. Reception for the idea was mixed, some people loved it, others couldn't get over the race element.

In any event, I'm glad to see it finally come to fruition. I've watched that trailer a few times now, can't wait to see the movie.
