  • “Fighting Words” – Brewster-Liakhovich: What the Heavyweights, Boxing and Showtime Needed

The dark clouds have parted, the witching hour has passed, and suddenly it is daybreak, and for the first time in ages, light is shining through.

This moment had been delayed for nearly a year after James Toney’s positive steroid test put on the back burner any semblance of a paradigm shift or sea change. As fate would often have it, just when things were looking on the bright side, our hoping for the best ended up jinxing any possibility of such, henceforth bringing on the worst.

Since then, there had been much talk about what was needed for the heavyweights and for boxing: unification had the top priority, and on an interim basis we needed entertaining fights whose results provided some sort of direction in this labyrinth that lacked any obvious escape.

We would not settle for anything except what we wanted, much like Shylock in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, who could not be swayed from his obsession for a pound of flesh.

And while his character and motivations were influenced by prejudice and hatred, leaving him defeated and at the mercy of the court, we boxing fans were eventually able to satisfy ourselves with an ultimate goal outside the stubbornness of tunnel vision. Salvation came not from Portia, but from the portly, when Lamon Brewster and Sergei Liakhovich weighed in with their heavy pounding of flesh. [details]

I like this article. Two fighters fought a good fight Saturday night.

It's a good article. That was a great fight, on a non-PPV on a free Showtime weekend, and it was HW's. That's about as good as you can ask for. It should help to repair the damage to the public persception of boxing that Toney and Rahman inflicted two weeks ago.

Unfortunately, they both have one thing in common. It looks like rematches will be called for on both fights, extending any possible unification bouts until they settle their scores, whereas had either Toney or Rahman won outright, or if Brewster had won, then rematches would have been dead and ultimate unification that much closer.

Side note on Segeri- I see him having problems in the rematch and possibly down the road. It didn't look to me like Brewster's team had seen much of him. They weren't prepared at all to counter that right to the body, easily the most important punch in the fight. I have to believe with the left hook Brewster has, and with McGirt studying film, that a rematch will look very different. McGirt has a strong record on rematches where his fighter had problems the first time- Ward-Gatti, Jones-Tarver, etc. Then again, Sergei looked like he just had Brewster's number in there, only getting in trouble if he got in the ropes. Whenever Sergei had room he dominated. That's going to be tough to overcome. I normally don't like immediate rematches after a clear decision, but this one should be interesting.

Of course after this loss Brewster is going to say he wants the rematch and of course lyko is going to say he will give it to him.

however i dont think we should be so quick to assume brewster is going to take this fight? first there is the possibility that due to the beating he took he may have to take an extended layoff. there is also the possibility that they will decide to go back to the drawing board and take the show elsewhere and possibly for more money against sam peter.

i dont think there should be an immediate rematch in this instance. brewster most likely will not be ready or able to fight again in 4 months. lyko, if he has any grasp of the magnitude of the possibility he has snagged will look to fight ASAP and for as much $$$ possible. he can fight again in 4 months, and because of the way their schedules are lining up he and klitschko could be a naturl matchup. think late august lyko/klitschko to unify the titles, with the winner fighting brewster next. just throwin out some possibilities

lamon brewster is having surgery for a detached retina, thats why this fight isnt going down next, and thats why you shouldnt post things making them out like its a done deal.
