Comments Thread For: Malignaggi: Golovkin Can't Move Up Just One For Ward?

Former two-division world champion Paulie Malignaggi is a little confused with the recent outcry from fans who are requesting a dream-match between WBC/WBO/WBA welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

Mayweather, who turned pro at super featherweight, has captured titles in five weight divisions. Golovkin is wiling to drop down to the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds to make the fight. The last time Mayweather, who holds the WBC/WBA titles at 154, fought at the full division limit was in 2012 against Miguel Cotto. A fight with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, in 2013, was at a catch-weight of 152. Both Canelo and Cotto are smaller fighters when compared to Golovkin.

Yawn. The same can be said of Ward, who (unlike Golovkin) has long since cleaned up at 168. He should get some big paydays at 175, whilst Golovkin can at least try to clean up at 160.

But the subject isn't what Andre Ward should do, its about what Golovkin should do as opposed to trying to fight a WW

Or Ward trying to fight a MW. Self-closing circle, if that's even a term.

If Mayweather and Golovkin fought it would be at 154 (well it wouldn't..if Canelo came in at 152, i imagine Golovkin would be made to come in at a similar weight).
Mayweather wouldn't be moving up yet another division. He'd be fighting at one he holds titles in. It's more a case of GGG moving down

As for Golovkin moving up a division for Ward, the same can be said for Ward with Kovalev.

I don't get the comparison? Ward didn't offer to come down to 160 to fight Golovkin. I know Ward said he'd drop down to 160 to fight Floyd, and he had Dawson drop down to 168 to fight him....

Malinaggis logic is seriously flawed. Nobody wants mayweather to move up at all. Some of mayweathers best wins are at 154 against cotto and canelo and mayweather is champion at 154. Ggg would be the one moving down to an unnatural weight to fight mayweather, not the other way around. Then he says why doesn't ggg move up to 168 to fight ward but currently ward is fighting at 175 where kovalev fights so ward wouldn't have to move any weight class at all to fight his best opponent. The only reason Paulie is still getting fights is because he is a haymon/mayweather d rider like so many on here

Fans of GGG/Manny/Kovalev/Wlad think GGG will beat Floyd at 154 and are desperate to see him lose, so they call for that fight. They think GGG loses to Ward, so they don't want that fight.

Floyd can find opponents at 147 and 154 so he isn't in the same boat as GGG claims to be. Since GGG can't, making a Ward fight seems like a better option than fighting guys who are not much of a challenge.

Hopefully, they will fight before the year is out.

Ward doesn't even know for sure what weight he is going to be fighting at.
Pretty sure there was an article about it on this site.
Paul should try following boxing outside of the PBC alternate universe...You know, the one with real weight classes lol
