Comments Thread For: Tarver Admits Being Steered To Wilder, Wants Klitschko

Former champion Antonio "Magic Man" Tarver (31-6, 22KOs) could easily step in the path of facing WBC heavyweight king Deontay Wilder (34-0, 33KOs) - but that fight is not in his plans. Tarver wants the king of the division, WBA/IBO/WBO/IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Tarver must first defeat former cruiserweight ruler Steve Cunningham (28-7, 13KOs) on August 14th at the Prudential Center in Newark. The fight is big crossroads battle. The loser will take a big step back.

Hmm seems a bit far fetched for Tarver to be seriously considered as an opponent for Klitchko. Anyway Al feels Tarver is better suited as a name on Wilders resume. That could backfire though as Tarvr would actually be a step up for Wilder.

Tarver won't get past Cunningham, let alone Wlad/Wilder.

Sure about that? Cunningham's one of the chinniest fighters around, whereas Tarver has never been stopped or even seriously hurt.

Yep. USS boxes him to a comfortable UD.

As for being one of the chinniext fighters around, he's only ever been stopped once, and has faced far bigger punchers than Tarver in his career.

Cunningham is chinny, but he usually gets up. Continues fighting/boxing well. Tarver isnt a true heavyweight. Should be a good fight.

While I respect that he wants to go after the real champ in the division, beating Wilder would make the Klitschko fight a real possibility. I'd give Tarver a real good chance at beating Deontay.

Speaks for the state of boxing that you have commentators who are both part time retired and part time title contenders at the same time.

                Tarver at HW
                Flores at CW
                Malignaggi at WW

It's like Haymon boxing is so desperate for known faces that they need their own commentators to get in the ring to make PBC seem more legit. I'm surprised Ray Leonard hasn't been asked to put on the gloves yet.

That's so funny it's pathetic. Wilder just fights the easiest guys. I didn't even know Tarver was still boxing. And he's not a HW, and he's past his prime. I bet wilder will fight Bradley next or Ken Lakusta.
