Comments Thread For: Gallagher Hopes Paul Smith Retires After Ward Beating

Trainer Joe Gallagher is urging Paul Smith to call time on his career in the wake of his defeat to Andre Ward in America.

The 32-year-old struggled to make the 172lbs catchweight and was unable to keep up with ruthless WBA (super) super-middleweight champion Ward, prompting Gallagher to throw in the towel in the ninth round.

Smith works for Sky Sports as a pundit and seemed unsure over his future in the ring after the fight, saying he would be spending some time away from the sport and considering his options with his family.

Hes did himself and his brothers proud noting to be ashamed off. Worse fighters have became world champions. He should retire now or fight at a lower level British or European level.

      That's always been his level.

He should fight Rocky Fielding. There's some rivalry there. He had a go at Fielding for missing weight once and they're obviously both Scousers. Both average too.

I think he should retire for sure. He finished his career with a flat nose.

Shame for a relatively handsome guy like him.

Focus on commentating and guiding your brothers to world title fights.

he was absolutely brutal! I dunno how he managed to last as many rounds as he did, if he had of listened to Carl Froch about the water retaining perhaps he woulda bit a little bit better off than he is now
