Comments Thread For: Geale, Shaw Were Relucant To Accept Cotto Catchweight

Daniel Geale and his team knew what they were getting into when first signing for a June 6 catchweight showdown with Miguel Cotto.

It doesn’t mean they have to like it one bit.

The former middleweight titlist is gunning for a shot at the true lineal championship. With that desire came the concession to meet Cotto—the reigning middleweight king—at a catchweight of 157 lbs. Cotto’s side was fairly blunt in its terms—accept the deal or look for another fight.

Team Geale: "Catchweight with Cotto was never an issue."

The announcement of Miguel Cotto next facing Daniel Geale didn’t exactly overwhelm the boxing public, other than the fact that the June 6 clash will mark Cotto’s return to New York. Even more unsettling was the accompanying news that the middleweight championship bout will take place at a maximum catchweight of 157 lbs., three pounds below the division limit. Cotto demanded—and was granted—a catchweight in place for last year’s challenge of the middleweight crown for his eventual 10th round stoppage of long-reigning lineal king Sergio Martinez. The maximum limit was 159 lbs., inconsequential in the grand scheme of things since Martinez—a career welterweight and junior middleweight before moving up for good in 2009—has only weighed heavier than that twice in his entire career, both times less than a pound above that mark.

Well damn never say never huh?

Did you read the article? He just criticized how its dumb to fight for a title at a catchweight.

Geale said in the article: "I find it funny. It should be at 160 but I'm not going to complain."

This title is misleading as well as the other one. The article you posted they don't even say the word "never."

Both articles contain slight criticisms of a title fight at 157 but both articles agree that Geale and his team found it odd but no problem since the agreement was needed to have a big title fight with Miguel Cotto.

catchweights just ruin everything, especially a championship fight,if cotto wants to fight at 155 or 157 fine, but the limit is 160 so don't deny that to the opponent, middleweight is up to 160 not 157,i think there should be a new rule with catchweights that it shouldn't be allowed in championship fights

well with geale saying he's hoping it's the last time i'm assuming he doesn't like it but since it's cotto and a championship fight he really didn't want to pass on the opportunity,it's almost like when cotto fought pacquiao, pac wanted the catchweight and cotto didn't,but he did at the end knowing it was a lot of money,,,bottom line is catchweights shouldn't be allowed

Yes I did read the article and I agree with him about the opponents being allowed to weigh in at the full limit.

All I did was point out their flip flopping frame of minds.

No shit. Never heard of the phrase, "Never say never"?

"It wasn't an issue at all. As long as it was a catchweight we were confident geale can make, it was no discussion."-Gary Shaw

The arrogance of Dodo is really getting to be kinda boring. Guy acts like he's some legend or whatever. Skroo catchweights. Like others (and Geale) are saying. Come into the ring below weight if you want. But don't make the other guy do it. That just b.s. Proof Dodo needs a crutch to even beat Geale.

agree with everything here. I hope as well that Cotto's next fight vs a MW will be at 160 full limit.

The problem with catchweights is fighters ask for it when they've previously fought or are fighting in the weightclass their opponent is in.

Catchweights have happened since the early 20th century so there's no stopping them anyhow.
