Comments Thread For: Kovalev Takes The West Step, Ward on The Radar

During his run on HBO, Sergey Kovalev has been a bit of a globetrotter having performed in the U.K. and Canada (twice) while Main Events has attempted to build a home base for him in Atlantic City - a city that has been struggling economically. With that, a decision has been made to head west with Kovalev.

His upcoming bout on July 25th against his IBF mandatory, Nadjib Mohemmedi, will take place at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Kathy Duva, the head of Main Events, believes that Las Vegas will need attractions as the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao head into the very twilight of their careers.

Kovalev has a fan friendly style so it is no surprise that he is welcome in Las Vegas. Best of luck, Sergey. And you can be sure that fans will love to see you in a fight against Andre Ward.

Judging by that article, with Kovalev getting mobbed by Californian fans, it seems that Kovalev's fights should perhaps have been moved out West some time ago.

I dont think Kovalev has developed a fanbase yet, which is a shame. Id think getting a fight in NYC and getting Russian fans there is his bet. I dont see Ward-Kovalev doing very well in Las Vegas

That was Golovkin's original plan, but it turned out Southern California was the best place for him to develop a fanbase with the Mexican-American fans.

Why give Ward such an advantage?
