Flyweight Samuel Gutierrez (11-12-4, 3 KOs) ventured to Houston from Monterrey, Mexico, and upset hometown favorite Juan Leija (11-2-1, 3 KOs) at the Bayou City Events Center via eight-round majority decision. Leija won the early rounds but Gutierrez took over as Leija seemed to fade down the stretch. The scores were 77-75, 78-74 and 5 76-76.
What looked at first glance to be a size mismatch turned into be a spirited slugfest as Celso Pinzon (3-3-1, 3 KOs), an overfed welterweight, came up against Justin Ledet (4-0, 2 KOs), a natural heavyweight. At 6-foot-three, Ledet towered over Pinzon who stood 5-foot-8 at the most. It resembles a pig fighting a horse, with the porky animal surprisingly holding his own against the much larger and muscular beast. Ledet won by scores of 40-36 (twice) and 39-37, which failed to reflect the competitiveness of the rounds.
