For years, Wladimir Klitschko’s detractors have said that he gets away with too much grabbing, holding, and leaning down on his opponents, a tactic that not only wears down his foes but also helps protect Klitschko in close.

Klitschko isn’t often penalized for this, but on Saturday night against Bryant Jennings, referee Michael Griffin took a point from Klitschko in the 10th round.

I can not grasp why Wlad is not credited for his movement more, those big punches Jennings threw Wlad just shook them off, used lateral movement and went back to work with the solid jab Jennings clearly couldn't get around, do he went under !

Jennings and Furry are two different fights, Fury ain't going around it or under it. He's just going down, early.

I agree with what you've said, but I would add that perhaps the ref should have been looking at Jennings and why he was diving in yet not throwing significant punches as he closed the gap to Wlad. Was there some magician holding Jennings arms and keeping him from throwing as he approached Wlad? Or, was it that Jennings' intent was to hug Wlad's body and in getting Wlad to clinch influence the ref to penalize Wlad? Jennings and his team certainly made it a point leading up to the fight to emphasize the fact that Wlad clinches during his fights. What Jennings and team did not do was to compare how much and in what way Wlad clinches vs how much and in what way Muhammad Ali clinched during his fights. It is an interesting comparison, and any boxing fan that isn't aware or has forgotten Ali's superb clinching should check out Ali's fights on YouTube. Ali clinched and clinched a lot, yet I never recall that he was penalized a single point for clinching in his career.

Klitschko was given like 5 "final warnings" before he had a point taken. Stop ****ing clinching and fight.

For as huge as Wlad is he fights like a scared schoolgirl. He's a disgrace to the HW division.

He wasn't doing that much actually. The smaller fighter fell into the clinch; I was incidental on many occasions not intentional.

All-in-all, I thought the ref did a decent job of preventing the excessive holding that we're used to in Klitschko fights, however, I thought a numerous occasions he broke the fighters up too quickly. A better tactic would have been to instruct the fighters to fight their way out of the clinch.

Wlad clinched 96 times against Jennings, i counted. No doubt it would've been even more if the ref didn't get involved.

Thats my impression as well. Jennings was leading in with his head and they just found themselves in a clinch when he rushed in. Later in the fight when Klitschko had lost a point, Jennings was still rushing in and getting caught up together despite Klitschko keeping his hands up to show he wasn't holding

im certainly not a big fan of Klitschko's style, but what exactly are you supposed to do when a guy keeps bull rushing you and sticking his head in your armpit?

Yeah, the ref tried. He didn't want to be unfair to Wlad, so he was hesitant to take the point. Still, don't give so many "final" warnings if they aren't final.

And he did try to have them fight it out, but Wlad started half-clinching and walking Jennings into the ropes so he couldn't really do that, and like everyone else Jennings was too accepting, especially once the warnings started.
