  • Comments Thread For: Klitschko Not Aiming at Joe Louis’s Title Defense Record

Wladimir Klitschko’s decision win over Bryant Jennings this past Saturday marked the 18th successful defense of a world title Klitschko won from Chris Byrd nine years ago, in April 2006.

That brings him even closer to the 25 defenses that heavyweight great Joe Louis made during his reign — though Klitschko’s time as lineal champion has only been since his 2009 win over Ruslan Chagaev and has included 11 victories since.

People keep asking Klitschko about aiming for Louis’s record. Klitschko says that the record isn’t something he’s going after right now and is reverential of Louis and others who came before Klitschko’s generation of big men.

He doesn't have to, but would be great.

He can retire after Fury and Wilder fights.

If he wants he can give Joshua an early shot.

Klitschko is such a humble champion. Much respect to you.

well louis was the legit champ for 25 defenses. wlad really has only been legit champ for 4 fights. some might erroneously claim he became champ after beating chagaev but that would be wrong. in no other era could a person be considered the champ by beating the third best guy in the division so no special treatment for this mug.

After Fury and Wilder, who would there be to motivate him to continue? Maybe Jennings will have earned another shot by then. But Joshua? Great prospect, but a long way from ready for Wlad.
