  • Comments Thread For: Chavez Jr. No Longer a Top Option for Team Golovkin

It wasn’t even a year ago that a deal was in the works to put middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin in a bout with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who had moved up in weight.

But Chavez was unhappy with the terms of the deal Top Rank was offering him. The bout with Golovkin fell through. And with Chavez’s loss April 18 to light heavyweight Andrzej Fonfara, there’s far less interest from Golovkin’s team in facing him.

“Now that Chavez got beat, I think Chavez is on the backburner for a couple of fights,” said Golovkin’s trainer, Abel Sanchez, in an interview on April 24.

Never liked Chavez Jr in the first place. Him joining up with Haymon made me dislike him even more. I'm glad he got it handed it to him, and Haymon too. That's what happens when you act like a prima donna with no substance. I'm glad GGG is no longer entertaining him.

Haymon got in Chavez ear told him to turn down the GGG fight which was a career payday and hold out his contract with Top Rank. And it all blew up in his face. His career is ruined got destroyed, booed, Mexican fans turned on him throwing beers.

Chavez Jr should have taken his azz whoopin from GGG and collected a career high payday in the process instead of getting his azz whooped by fonfara for far less!

IMO GGG is literally one of the most boring fighters to watch. He has never been in the ring with anyone who has a remote chance of beating him. GGG for me would be much more exciting if he was willing to face someone with a genuine chance in beating him. IMO GGG is just wasting his prime at MW he is obviously the best there but I think he wants to beat Hopkins' defense record before moving up to 68.

If you actually paid attention to what GGG himself says after every fight and in all his interviews in between fights, you would know that his goal is to unify all the titles before moving up. For some reason, many people seem to have great difficulty getting that into their heads.
