Madison Square Garden, New York City - In a spirited welterweight battle, Olympian Sadam Ali (22-0, 13KOs) kept his undefeated record intact with a ten round unanimous decision over durable Francisco Santana (22-4-1, 11KOs). The scores were 97-93, 97-93 and 100-90.
Santana, who rehydtrated to 167-pounds on fight night, applyed the pressure in the first round and started taking the fight to Ali. In the second, Ali came alive and began to let his hands go with accurate shots to the head and body. Santana continued to stalk in the third round and never let up, showing a high workrate to make a big push to overwhelm Ali, who was boxing and moving around the ring very well all night long. Ali's boxing ability and accurate shots were more than Santana was able to overcome. Santana was wobbled in the tenth and final round but continued to come forward with combinations.
